History of the Jeanie

The Jeanie Johnston made her maiden voyage from Blennerville in Tralee, Co. Kerry to Quebec in Canada in 1848 with 193 passengers on board. She carried 2,500 Irish emigrants on 16 transatlantic voyages to North America throughout the Famine years.

The original Jeanie Johnston was built in Quebec in Canada in 1847. She was commissioned by a Scottish-born shipbuilder and master craftsman, John Munn. She was purchased by Kerry-based merchants, John Donovan and Sons, for their family business.

Jeanie Johnston Trip

A fitting memorial to Ireland’s Famine emigrants

The ship sitting in Dublin Docklands today is an authentic replica of the original Jeanie Johnston, built to remember and honour Ireland’s Famine emigrants. The re-creation of the Jeanie Johnston was one of the most ambitious maritime heritage projects ever undertaken in Ireland.

The Famine – Relive one of Ireland’s darkest hours

The Famine was one of the darkest periods of Ireland’s history and resulted in a massive loss of life and widespread emigration. Almost ¼ of Ireland’s population either died or emigrated during this time.

The Jeanie Tour

One million Irish people fled Ireland during the famine. 2,500 took a gruelling voyage onboard the Jeanie Johnston. Take a journey back in time, get an insight into life on board a Famine ship and hear the stories of the people who made the gruelling voyage

“We found our visit to the Jeanie Johnston really interesting. Our guide Gearoid was very well-informed and interesting - we really learned a great deal about the plight of the Irish trying to leave Ireland during the potato famine of the 1840s. It was a very memorable visit.”
